Rik Van Houtteghem, DVM, MRCVS, Cert VD

Back by popular demand, Rik has rejoined the Community Vets team on a permanent part-time basis!

Rik moved to the UK  in 1987 soon after  graduating  from the University of Ghent, Belgium, and  has been working in small animal practice ever since.  He  gained a post gradate qualification in Veterinary Dermatology (diseases of the skin) and has found a niche in managing ‘itchy’ dogs and cats.

Prior to moving to Pill, Rik spent 17 years helping run and develop a busy small animal hospital in Dorchester, Dorset.

In his spare time Rik, otherwise quite humble, blows his own trumpet for the  Pill Festival Band.  He also volunteers in the community planting trees and helping to nurse them along to adulthood and helps with developing the wildflower meadow at Brookside and at Ham Green.

Rik owns a small sailing dinghy and can occasionally be seen on the Avon, frantically tacking back and forth,  trying to avoid running aground  in the  sludge.  Rik and his partner, enjoy walking along the Avon tow path and through Leigh Woods, usually stopping for an unavoidable break at Brackenwood tea rooms or the Bike Shed in Abbots Leigh, forever doing his best to support local businesses.   Making the best of their allotment, is an ongoing project.  Since the loss of Harvey, their beloved Labrador, the only pet is Zorba, the 40 year old Mediterranean bachelor tortoise, occasionally to be seen out on Ham Green keeping the dandelions in check!
